According to many different studies, experts have found that cleanliness helps people with both their mental and physical health. However, it should be noted that these timelines are based on the average household. Depending on how many people use certain areas, if the home has pets or children, or if some rooms just gets dirtier quicker, then you might need to clean more than the average recommendation.

Going by time, here’s when and what you should be cleaning:

Every Day

  • Wipe down surfaces like tables and counters (especially in the kitchen)
  • Wash dishes and wipe down kitchen sink
  • Wipe down bathroom sinks (could be done every couple days too)

Every Week

  • Vacuum the carpet and furniture
  • Mop the floors
  • Dust furniture while cleaning up clutter
  • Change and wash bed linens
  • Clean out the microwave

Every Month

  • Dust blinds
  • Vacuum the exterior of vents
  • Dust light fixtures and ceiling fans
  • Clean or change your duct’s air filters (may need to be sooner)
  • Scrub the tub or shower

Every 3 Months

  • Clean window frame
  • Wipe down and disinfect the refrigerator
  • Wash pillows and comforters
  • Move furniture so you can vacuum or clean beneath them

Every Year

  • Deep clean carpet
  • Deep clean upholstery

Every 2 to 3 Years

  • Get air ducts cleaned
